Former Camden Council leader given ministerial role in first week as an MP
Georgia Gould, ex-leader of Camden Council, has been appointed as a parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new cabinet office in her first week as an MP.
It is highly unusual for a new MP to be promoted to a ministerial position, but Gould, who was elected to represent Queen’s Park and Maida Vale, is one of five to have been given a junior ministerial role.
Gould, 38, had led Camden Council since 2017. A new leader has not yet been appointed.
Daughter of the late Baron Gould of Brookwood, a key New Labour adviser, Gould entered politics aged just 24 and became a councillor for Kentish Town, the ward in which she grew up.
Since a boundary change in 2022, she had represented Kentish Town South.
Camden Council is yet to announce the by-election date for residents to choose her replacement.
Two other by-elections will take place in Kilburn and Camden Square following the election to parliament of chief whip Lloyd Hatton and cabinet member Danny Beales.
